Indie Spotlight Lauren Runow

What do you do when you’re not writing?
I lead a very crazy life. I publish a community magazine with my husband, I run a non-profit science center for kids and I’m a mom of two very active boys so when I’m not writing you’ll find me having to do something with these three things.

When did you start writing?
August of 2014 but I didn’t publish my first book until September 2015.

In writing your book, did you travel anywhere for research?
I write a lot about the Bay Area in California where I live and I like to include some of my favorite places.

As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?
Oh man… That’s a hard one. There’s been so many ups and many downs. It really is the biggest rollercoaster I’ve ever been on. I can’t think of one big thing but a ton of little things that all worked together to get me where I am today.

What is your favorite part about writing adult contemporary romance and what is your least favorite?
The amazing people I’ve meet from all over the world is hands down my favorite part. My least favorite… all the promo work it takes. Writing the books are the easy part. Getting it ready and in people’s hands is crazy hard!

If you could go anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and why?
Anywhere that I could hide and be by myself so I could write without any distractions. That would be my dream!

If you had 4 hours of extra time today, what would you do?
Finish my WIP. I’m so close and know exactly what’s going to happen. Just don’t have time to sit down and actually do it.

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?
My first books really focused on the location but I like better focusing on the story and just generalizing the location. Then they don’t have to be so dead on about the facts. I hate reading a story about San Francisco (where I lived for 4 years) and it’s obvious those authors have never been there.

I know you LOVE music and your book Gravity is based on the song by Papa Roach, how awesome was it to write that book? What was your favorite part of writing it?
I was lucky enough to actually be behind the scenes when Papa Roach filmed the music video for Gravity. They are from my hometown and since I publish the community magazine I was invited to be a part of it. That song is everything. It’s so raw and so real. Gravity will always be the book that is my heart and soul. My favorite part was Trevin. He was a lot of me and my heart ached for him. He was broken but good hearted and just like everyone, he just needed his Gravity to keep him grounded.

Why was writing Falling into the Black so important to you?
Gravity took a lot of me. My writing is best with very dirty scenes and since Gravity wasn’t that type of book I had to focus more on perfecting the writing. Falling into the Black brought me back to my roots where I could have fun with some crazy hot scenes.

Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?
Music. Always music! Readers were wanting another Club Bridge book (Black Widow is also Club Bridge but they are both standalone novels) but I needed the idea first. Then I heard Falling inside the Black by Skillet and the entire book unfolded before my eyes. I love how songs can do that for me!

What are you currently working on? Do you have any new projects released in the coming months? If so, tell us about them.

Falling into the Black is a love triangle of sorts and I’m writing the other guys book (don’t want to give it away). It will be a standalone as well and actually nothing to do with Club Bridge. I don’t really follow “rules” when it comes to things like that. 😉 I will probably release it in January. I will be putting out my novella that was originally featured in the box set A Secret Affair in November as well.
