SPOTLIGHT: Ember-Raine Winters

Welcome to Spotlight Saturday! This week we have the lovely Ember-Raine Winters. She writes romantic suspense. Let’s find out more…

Welcome, Ember! So glad to have you on Love Indie Romance. Please tell us a little about yourself.

Hi! Thanks for having me! My name is Ember and I recently published my first romantic suspense novel Beautiful Delusions in February. I love reading and watching football. It’s my favorite. I love contact sports! I live in Central California with my two beautiful children.  I love reading and writing romance! I’m a mood reader so you can also find me reading science fiction or fantasy if the mood strikes me.

Your recent new release is Beautiful Delusions. One of your main characters, Kaylee, suffers from PTSD. How hard was it to write a character like that?

It’s pretty hard I mean I know a lot about PTSD but I also know there are different forms and like everything else it manifests differently in some people. Kaylee suffers in a way that’s most common. The hardest part about writing this, though, was because of my own experiences and many of her flash backs were extremely vivid. It took me a lot longer than I had hoped because I had to keep stopping.

You’ve written two other novels, Born to Resist and Born to War, both dystopian type novels. Do you find a certain type of genre easier to write?

Not really, all of my novels tend to be edge of your seat, fast paced novels whether it’s the dystopian ones or the new romantic suspense series I have been writing. I guess that would be what I find easiest to write. There is a sweet little romance in my first series as well but it’s not the focus of the story. I guess romance would probably be the genre I find easiest as long as there is some angst and action!

Do you have a favorite character you’ve ever written? What type of character are you most drawn to?

If you would have asked me this before Beautiful Delusions I would have said Jed from the Born Series. He is wise beyond his years and a loyal friend. He always knows what to say to make someone feel better and he is an absolute protector. Since I wrote Beautiful Delusions, I would have to say it’s Trey. He’s the clown and the flirt. He was so much fun to write because you never know what’s going to come out of his mouth! He is my favorite now but Jed is still a close second.

I’m drawn to protectors I guess. I love a character who goes out of their way to care for someone else. All the men in The Pride and Honor series are like that.

You write weekly flash fiction. Have you found this to help your writing goals? What do you like most about writing flash fiction?

Oh man! Yeah the flash fiction is a blast! It helped me a lot when starting the third book in this series. I feel like I know my characters better and I’m finding it a lot easier to write the third book now.

The best part of flash fiction are the crazy prompts! I love it! I like that I don’t know what the prompt is going to be and I have to think on my feet it’s really helped with creativity a lot!

What are you working on now? Do you plan writing any series?

Book 2 of the Pride and Honor Series Beautiful Sacrifice is available for pre-order and I have been writing Beautiful Deception for the last couple months. I am hoping to send it to my editor soon.

I’m pretty much a series writer. My first two books are the Born Series. There is going to be one more in that series and then Beautiful Delusions is the first book in The Pride and Honor Series. This is a fun one because each book is going to follow a different couple. There will be a total of four books when I am done with this group of people. Watch for the rest of the series because Kaylee and Griffins story is just the tip of the ice berg when it comes to what these characters go through!

You’re a single mom raising two kids. Is it hard to find time to write? Do you have a routine that helps you?

I do most of my writing on my phone. So I can do it anytime I have a spare minute or errant thought. *Chuckles* It’s easier that way and then in the early mornings before my son gets up I can sit down and write, or in the evenings after they go to bed I try to get some writing done. It’s a juggle but I make time for all of it.

What is your favorite part about being an indie author? Highs? Lows?

The community is definitely my favorite part. I love that we all help each other. It’s a lot of fun and I have met a ton of cool people along the way. Lows, I don’t know, I guess I would say visibility is one of the lows because I would love for people to read and identify with my books but being an indie author with so many other fabulous books out there it makes it hard to be seen.

Crazy question time! Let’s say Beautiful Delusions is being made into a movie. You get to play Kaylee. Who would play the hero, Griffin? And because Trey is one of your favorite characters, and Griffin’s brother, who would play Trey?

That would be awesome! Oh man I would LOVE to have Liam Hemsworth play Griffin OMG! That would be amazing! Playing the lead with my favorite leading man? Sheesh! Is it getting hot in here?

Trey is a goofy redhead, but he is built just like the rest of the male cast of Beautiful Delusions. I would say Scott Grimes or Seth Greene. I think they would get his character better but wouldn’t really have his size. Sometimes you have to make concessions when there just isn’t someone that would fit all the characteristics.

Any last thoughts?

Thank you so much for having me! It was a lot of fun!
